Common signs and symptoms of PCD
Newborn babies with PCD may present with breathing difficulties, and some babies may need to be treated in the Special Care Baby Unit. Many children have a susceptibility to chest infections from birth and they also have sniffly, runny noses. PCD can affect people in different ways, but the most common symptoms are:
- Frequent lung infections (e.g. bronchiolitis and pneumonia)
- Hearing problems due to glue ear and ear infections
- Runny or blocked nose
- Sinusitis
- Bronchitis
- Bronchiectasis (irreversible progressive lung damage because of recurrent infections)
- Fertility issues
- 50% of patients have situs inversus or dextrocardia. If you have situs inversus, all the organs are located on the opposite side to normal. If you have dextrocardia, then only the heart is on the opposite site to normal.
